Urgent and Primary Care Centre (UPCC) - Nanaimo (Medical Arts)

Provides same-day urgent care of non-emergency injuries and illnesses for patients who are unable to see a family doctor or care provider at their regular or walk-in clinic.
Medical Arts UPCC is available for same-day care for those who have a health concern that should be seen within 12 to 24 hours, but are unable to see their family doctor or nurse practitioner. An integrated team of health-care professionals including physicians, registered nurses, social worker, pharmacist, counsellors and medical office staff provide non-emergency care.
Note: The Medical Arts UPCC no longer sees patients on a walk-in basis. Please see below for further information

The following health concerns can be treated at the Medical Arts UPCC
  • Sprains and strains
  • Suture removal
  • Stitches for cuts, minor bleeding
  • Coughs, colds, sore throat
  • Infections or abscesses, such as chest, ear or bladder
  • Mild asthma symptoms
  • New or worsening pain (not including chest pain)
  • Minor child illnesses, fevers and injuries
  • Minor allergic reaction
  • Mental health concerns (low mood, anxiety, depression)
  • Some reproductive and sexual health testing and support
  • Support and care after sexual assault
If you are experiencing a condition that is not an emergency but requires treatment within 24 hours, visit the Medical Arts Urgent and Primary Care Centre. Please go to the nearest emergency department or call 911 for life-threatening emergencies or serious injury.

How to Access
  • Call to book an appointment at 778-766-5144 when the clinic opens (see below), on a first-come, first served basis
  • Patients who do not have access to a telephone can attend the UPCC in person, but cannot expect an appointment preferentially or sooner
  • Phone Lines Open for Same Day Appointments from 8:00 AM - 9:00 PM Monday through Friday, and from 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM on Saturday, Sunday and holidays (see below for more hours of operation information).
  • A nurse or team member may ask a few questions to ensure the patient receives the right care, as soon as possible
  • Please Note: Telephone consults are not done, and it is office policy that no prescriptions are given for narcotics or sleeping pills.

Monday to Friday from 8:00 AM - 9:00 PM, and
Saturday, Sunday and Holidays from 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM.
Clinic is open all holidays except Christmas day.
Hours are based on physician availability; call to book a same day appointment.
